big business

I know that business is business and that there are no friends when you're in business, but what is big business doing for Australian birds? After all they encourage urban development in new areas and change the environment that birds depend on for survival. What are they contributing to the benefit of the Australian natural environment and its conservation? Shouldn't there be a levy to save Australian birds and their environment imposed on big business in order to raise money to save them. The individual can't do all the work how about they use their multi billion $ profits for something that is in urgent need of repair.

A number of corporations fund bird projects but I'm confident this is for the purpose of establishing their environmental credentials so that they'll be able to argue that they're environmentally responsible when they propose their next big mine or whatever.

Cynical? No. Totally realistic, I believe.

Rather than a tax on companies to protect birds it would be better if environmental protection was policy & practice for all Australian governments, I suggest. Sadly, we'll wait until Hell freezes over before the current federal & state governments allow this to happen. Given global warming this won't be happening any time soon. So it's up to us to act locally.

I think it's a pity the greens lost there way as they could have been so effective in this area. They traded their undoubted green cred for a whole lot of really loony left positions. They had momemtum and now it's gone.

Hmmm... I don't think the Greens espouse 'loony' left politics, but that could just be from my personal viewpoint. But, certainly, it does seem a growing divide has emerged in the party between the 'Environmental Greens' and 'Social Greens'.

I don't know what to make of the state government. On one hand, the NSW gov't seems to do aboslutely nothing for the environment, but I remain hopeful that they can do the right thing. Maybe I'm idealistic and naive, but I still wrote a short submission against a couple of coal mining projects in the Blue Mountains last night.

Hi Lachlan, you put it better than me. Social v Environmental is just what I meant. Should have stuck to Environmental. My partner is German and she says the same thing happened there. People were really enthused about finally some environmental action happening and then is went social and was all gone. A shame.

Still, aren't the German Greens governing one German state (Baden-Württemburg)?

Hi Lachlan, not sure but I do know that they were in power as part of a coalition at some stage. Can't get my partner to talk about Germany much she likes Australia so muchsmiley

Shame, it sounds like an interesting country.

I don't really think politics should be discussed on this forum, but at the moment I wouldn't have thought it was the greens that needed criticising. The media always distorts green politics to emphasise the extreme elements, while shielding the more extreme parts of the conservative parties.
