The distribution mapp I looked at in Michael Morcombe's Field Guide to Australian Birds suggests this exotic pest species is common in Newcastle but perhaps not quite as common as elsewhere in south eastern Australia. If you can discourage this bird then Australian bird species will be advantaged.
i think that would be around the northernmost fringe of its range, Lyn.
though they have rarely been recorded in W NSW and in SE QLD on occasion.
i believe in parts of their native Eurasia some populations undertake long-distance migrations to escape winter cold.
