Sorry about the quality of the photo but only noticed that it looked different when I was browsing through my photos and it was in the background. The area it was in was a lagoon with ducks,swans cormorants etc. and out in the open. When I enlarged the photo it looked like an owls head tucked in towards its body but can only see the top of the head, maybe someone can identify it with the feather colour and detail. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
I personally think it's a comorant or some other water bird, as to exactly what type I can't determine from the photo.

Looks like a female Darter sleeping with her head tucked in.
Thanks Windhover that certainly makes sense as there were other Darters nearby and I don't think I have seen a female before, Is their plumage this striking on the females. Thanks for your help.

Yep definitely a darter with the tucked in head... you can see that oily sheen on her wings...makes them reallly attractive in the right light .

Thanks birdie yes it certainly was the colour that threw me, I have observed a lot of Darters but had never seen one presented this way.
