I only think it is a water bird, because it was at the end of a swampy place when it saw me and fled.
Only managed to shot the backside of it. Any ideas as to what it might be will be appreciated. Thanks. G.

Latham's Snipe
Thanks, Steven. There was an article in the Gold Coast Bulletin about a snipe and a local pond.
I haven't seen the Gold Coast Bulletin article, but I expect it was probably about a couple of Australian Painted Snipe that have recently been seen at Tea Tree Wetlands, Arundel. Painted Snipe are much rarer than your Latham's Snipe.
