hello Araminta ,yes i think your right on the Bee-eater ,the beak looked wrong for king fisher ,thank you,i missed it about 10ft away before i could stop ,now i know were they are i will go back to see if i can get closer pic ,bruce
Definitely a rainbow bee eater. We currently have 7 at our place (s.e. slopes of Mt Lofty Ranges SA) & they're around usually late afternoon but sometimes in the morning. So there's a good chance you'll see it again (& perhaps some others) at the same spot. Try to visit again before mid February because they'll be preparing for their northward migration about then. By the way, was that photo taken in Little Desert National Park?
The word "little desert" reminds me of a birding 4x4 / camping trip. there was nobody but us camping for the night, so we pitched the tent close to the toilet block. Early in the morning nature called, I didn't bother to dress, and as it was warm, I wasn't wearing much. Knowing it was just us , I put the toilet roll under my arm and went. Nobody to be seen...... but when me and the toilet roll came around the corner, there was a bus , and about 40 japanese tourists neatly queueing up. Can you imagine how they giggled?

hello Woko ,yes it was on the edge of the little desert on the wimmera river ,horse shoe bend park just south of dimboola ,Araminta ,did they have camera's ? lol ,,bruce
Well done on seeing this bird Bruce - it looks reasonably far away but this is very identifiable as a Bee Eater!
They probably did and those photos are probably posted on a website somewhere under "Best Photos" or "Identifications" and Marie Louise may be as famous in front of the camera as behind it!
