They were on the lawn infront of the Hastings Police Station, when suddenly all of them took off .

Good one. A lot of them are carrying grass or whatever they've picked up off the lawn.
They would have been very noisy. We have flocks of several 100 (they have a rotation of tall trees to roost in at night) and they set up quite a racket.

we have a mob of cockatoos but only twenty or so that fly over early morning late afternoon you can hear them coming before you see them

There were at least 4x as many, I couldn't get them in one frame of the big lens. That's why they are a bit blurry
, I would have had to stand in the middle of the road.

I saw a flock like that at Easter heading up to the Bunya Mountains. It must have been several hundred at least.
