hello from the duckpond

My name is Cecilia Sharpley and I live in the Yarra Valley, Victoria.

I share my acre of native garden with many birds, large and small (many attracted to the large pond). We also have a family/families of resident swamp rats who tunnel under and over the garden beds.

My camera is always sitting on the table waiting for the neverending stream of daily bird visitors.

Hi Cecilia, lovely duckpond, mudbrick house and native garden. Oh, also I love the "new bed".

Thanks Maggie

Actually at the moment it's more of a 'frogpond' than a duckpond, as the wood ducks haven't flown in for a while, but the pond has supported literally thousands of tadpoles since last August, and at last the pobblebonk frogs have discovered the pond. At night we can lie in bed and hear at least four different frogs croaking, pobbling, creaking and another that sounds like it has two stones hitting them together.

The pond is a constant source of joy to us and everything else that shares the garden - except when some of the taddies fall victim to the 'food chain'.

Hi Cecilia and welcome.

I think I recognise you from Scribblygum.

Either that or there's a major coincidence going on with swamp rats!

I like the sound of your bird habitat and look forward to hearing more.

Yes, booshkie, it's one and the same me!

I discovered Scribblygum and Birds in backyards on the same day and am delighted to have found such places - due, I have to say to my son, who pointed me to this website as he disputed my ID of the kingfishers (he was right of course).

I am about to begin a new section on the duckpond website, devoted to 'Wildlife at the Duckpond', which will have many photos of the swamp rats and plenty of birds - although not as well photographed as I've found on this website.
