In 33 years I've heard a Spotted Turtle Dove on only 2 or 3 occasions at our place on the s.e. slopes of the Mt Lofty Ranges in SA. Make that 3 or 4 occasions because I heard one calling early this morning.
Lots of folk like having this feral species around but it's not encouraged on our patch because I strongly suspect it competes for ecological space with native pigeons, especially the Peaceful Dove which is yet to become established here. I shall be keeping my eyes open for any signs of nesting by the Spotted Turtle Dove but I anticipate the presence of several raptor species will ensure its stay is short-lived.
