A win for the Darling and the Macquarie Marshes KBA!

Last week, the Senate voted AGAINST draining 70 billion litres more water from the Darling River. The Darling is connected to Macquarie Marshes, a critical refuge for half a million waterbirds.

It's a huge relief for the birds of the Basin.

Last year, BirdLife Australia declared Macquarie Marshes as a Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) in Danger, because of the proposed changes to the Basin Plan that would have dramatically reduced the habitat quality of the Marshes for Bitterns and other waterbirds.

Thank you to everyone who signed our petition calling on the Federal Government to stand up for the birds of the Basin, donated to support the campaign or helped to collect the monitoring data showing threatened birds like the Australasian Bittern breeding in the KBA – let’s celebrate this success!
