HI everyone, I've been wondering for some time about the cockies I see at work, they are like this one but why are they called yellow tails when they look white to me?

It is a reminder as to why people ought take notice of the published locality. Northam is in WA, as far as I know - where they have 2 species of Black-Cockies with white tails, or pale yellowish white tail panels, anyway.
Yellow-tailed Black-Cockies are south-east Australian birds, going only as far west as Eyre Peninsula (in SA).

It is a White-tailed Black Cockatoo. Also known as Carnaby Black Cockatoo's which are endangered due to lack of nesting sites.
We get these and the Red-Tails over this way.

Yes, I was aware that the picture was taken in Northam, being a long time resident of WA myself, but i still see black cockies here on the Sunshine coast that have white looking tails and no obvious yellow, so are they yellow or white tails by name? I have never been able to get a close up picture of them as they fly high and are always on their way to somewhere each day without stopping . They make a gorgeous sound and I go running outside but am usually too late or don't have the camera that day.
thanks
birdie.

I thought it looked yellow in the photo and had no idea where Northam was - listing state with town names would be helpful.

HI All,

Thanks to all who answered my query. Sorry I didn't put what state, just didn't think about. I just come across that & another photo while looking though all my photos I took while in WA. I had seen those birds up top of the pine tree there & just took a couple of shots. The mess down on the path too, just amazing bird getting a feed.

Cheers

Hi Commish
i remember the mess the red tails used to make when we lived in Roleystone, the drive was covered in branches, leaves and gumnuts!!

I still don't understand the white and yellow tailed thing though. i'll have to try to get a pic of my cockies at work. maybe the tail is yellow but it is a very pale one in that case.
