Nice work capturing a cool moment. Thats alot of echidna in a single photo. I have never seen more than 2 together in the wild.

Thanks, Vas. After some research it seems it is breeding season for them. The lead one will be the female and the three followers are males wanting to breed with her. She keeps leading them around until all but one give up and the remaining male gets the right to breed with her.

Great photos rawshorty, I would love to see these beautiful creatures in the wild some day.

Thanks for sharing.

I should have mentioned that some years ago I found an Echidna on the side of the road a couple of kilometres from my place. To save it from being hit by a wildlife-hostile motorist I put it in a hessian bag (without urging from Alan Jones) & released it onto my property thinking how nice it would be to have at my doorstep the beginnings of an Echidna population.

Soon afterwards I learned that my action was strictly a no no. Apart from ensuring the Echidna doesn't get hit by a car it's best to allow it to continue on its chosen path. The Echidna's wanderings are purposeful & human interference is for the human not the Echidna.

Yes, Woko. The emotions we have are somewhat destructive at times.

One more pic.

Wow - same here, only ever seen individuals.  We have a stretch of road not far from here which my daughter and I have renamed Echidna HIghway, because it's rare if we are on that road that we don't see at least one foraging along the side...unless it's Winter.  Very interesting about the breeding habits, something I didn't know.  Gorgeous shots Shorty!

Absolutely love it! Great stuff shorty. That's interesting info about the males and breeding season.

Google suggests potential collective nouns as "flock", "herd" or "parade" and I'd suggest these guys fit in the "parade" category...

Cheers
