Meet my Nemisis who I finally managed to get a photo of after 2 years. It's my nemisis because I have heard it so many times when birding but I have never been able to see it, which is kind of funny given how brightly coloured it is. Even when I got it, I had heard it calling and was looking for over 30 mins for it. I finally caught a glimpse of it when it flew to another tree which was actually a better vantage point. Given it was very late in the afternoon, overcast and a fair distance away, I was quite pleased how well the photos turned out.
While I was there I managed to get a photo of a Whistling Kite, a young Eastern Yellow Robin a mystery bird which I think is a juvi Little Bronze Cuckoo.
Wow, these are brilliant.

Well you would be jelous to know that in the 1 week (which birdwatching was not even the main focus, so make it more like 3 days) that I have spent in QLD since I started birding, I quite by accident spotted one and photographed it. This was on my birthday. That said, my photos were nowhere near as good as these

Simply wonderful images Devo! The colours are simply amazing.
Beautiful photos, now you need to photograph a female to go with this male
Ummm... What is it? (pardon my ignorance, lol).
Beautiful bird, wonderful photos.

Sorry Al, its a Rose-Crowned Fruit Dove
Thanks Muz.
I'd be interested to know, how do you tell the difference?
Thanks alcatraz
I would have been very jealous up until Sunday, lol.
What a birthday present!
Yes I was very pleased. I got a number of new species that day, for the Gold coast is very different from Canberra being much warmer as well as coastal

Your third photo shows the cockbird cooing, as seen with all male pigeons / doves when courting / calling to females. I used to keep these guys in aviaries a few years back and you can only visually sex the birds by these males traits. We would get them DNA sexed as they are identical in appearance.
Cheers Muz
Thanks Muz, thats good to know only the males call like that.
What a great looking bird, terrific shots Devon. I know how you feel having a nemisis, mine is the Azure Kingfisher, I have a couple of long distance shots but have had them in the viewfinder numerous times and they have flown or there has been branches and leaves obstructing a decent shot.
Well done, i would love to come across an R-c FD one day.

Dont take life too seriously, it never ends well
Thanks Brian, laza & Shorty. They really are a beautiful looking bird. I'm sure now I have one I will see them everywhere. That will probably be the case with your Kingfisher Brian. Once you finally get your shot. You'll see them everywhere.
Shorty you are always welcome up here, would be more than happy to take you around to a few good spots.
