Here are two of eight photographs that I took this morning of a Fantail that just sat on the same twig in the same place for a number of minutes. Must have had a hangover.

I normally have the same experience as you. These guys just fidget and dart. That's why I was so pleasantly surprised when this one sat still, even when I moved closer for a few more shots.
Looks like you managed to get fairly close to him or her. I call them ADD birds because they rarely sit still.
