Big Year Challenge - any interest

Hi all - seems like the challenge section hasn't had a lot of action - anyone want to do a bit of a revival?

I've been participating on another forum (overseas) in a casual challenge - post as many photos of different species over the year (Big Year) as you can. I've found it good fun and a little impetus to regularly get out there and work on my (beginner) photo skills. It seems there are a few people here that like to photograph birds - anyone interested in posting up all their birds in a tongue-in-cheek "race"?

If a few people were interested, we could possibly start off with a Small Year (Sep-Dec) 2019 and if that went well and people wanted to, start a Big Year 2020 challenge next year.

All very casual / fun, open to photos and photographers of all ability, some possible rules (just ideas, open to discussion / suggestions) might include

  • Request a Big Year subforum to Photo Challenges from the admins to keep it tidy
  • One thread per participant per challenge - eg "Alex's Big Year 2019" and all photos to go in that thread
  • Every Bird Counts (EBC) - as long as it is clearly identifiable
  • Only photos taken by you in Australia within the Year (timeframe) can be submitted
  • Quantity not Quality - only your personal capacity for embarrassment (and EBC rule above) limits you!
  • 1 Species (including all subspecies)  = 1 Point - but feel free to post bonus pics of previously posted birds as you get better photos
  • Rule adjudication by popular vote / howling mob
  • Comments (nice ones) encouraged on all threads, those of us who want advice / criticism can ask for it
  • Winner takes all - fame, adulation, glory, bragging rights

Anyone want to play? :-) Probably needs 4-5 people to get it rolling.

Cheers

Alex

I'm on my own personal big year challenge atm and i could definitely incorporate a little year photographic challenge, even though i don't have a huge zoom on my camera i love taking photos so as long as expectations remain low on the photo quality front, i'd love to join in.

I cannot promise too much as travelling and internet access can be an issue. At this stage, I also do not photograph everything I see but will try to play if it generates some interest and enjoyment. A few more people would be better. Can we try Sept to December if Admin is on-board?

Hey! Admin here. Sounds like a fabulous idea and I am happy to set things up for you all!

I will create a subforum tomorrow (if thats OK, just about to get toddler dinner...)

Thanks for taking the lead on this Alex!

Cheers

Agree in principle, so long as it is not too complicated to follow. Will send admin a message containing a link to the thread for their input.

I think the challenges were good a year or 2 back, but like everything lost a bit of momentum as members come and go.

Yes thats right Dale - people lost interest and stopped posting. A revival sounds fab though!

Holly, thanks for offering to set that up. Let's give it a crack on a Sep-Dec basis, and see how we go. Great that some of you are interested, let's see if we can get some more. I'll kick off my thread on the weekend - I'm travelling in QLD for work but smuggled my camera with me :-)

Pip and Dale- no expectations, simple as, post identifiable birds and number them, and admire others who do same :-)
