I just wanted to confirm that this is a dark morph striated heron. It's the first time I've seen one this dark. This photo was taken in Laurieton, NSW. Thank you. :)

It certainly looks dark compared to the ones I have seen. The northern sub-species is much paler but not sure how much variation is seen in the eastern subspecies. I don't think it looks like staining but try posting on the Australian Bird Identification Facebook page for the experts to comment. Wish I could be of more help.

Wow, its a very handsome heron. Yes, it is a Striated, apparently they have a lot of variation, darker in the south, but I've never seen one that dark. Nice photo.
