Hi Araminta....the female kestrel has been a regular in my backyard for almost two years. A while back she took off and disappeared for about two weeks....when she came back she brought back with her what I think is a mate. She commands her perch on the apex of the roof covering our patio and will share with no one!!! She shows no aggression to any of the other birdlife which frequent my garden although she's not too warm towards a certain Kookaburra who is inclined to pinch her perch. I have a short video showing how responsive and friendly this Kestrel is....I had a post conversation with Birdie and he suggested putting it up on YouTube and creating a link to the forum so that those interested can have a 'peek'....so will have a go at that - Shaka
Hi Holly.....I did delete the prior post 'Kestrel and Co' as the embedded size format only displayed half the subject matter.....that's why a re posted an ammended collection to present the photographs in a better perspective. - Shaka
I deleted the old thread after you created this new one seeing as it was the same photos but these were the better ones - I saw the photos in this thead initially but I can't see them anymore.
Wow, wow, wow that is amazing and you are so lucky. I have viewed your video as well, oh you are one lucky bird person. I love how they all live in harmony. Keep those amazing photos coming and yes I think it is the accent. :-)
Thanks Wanda....I do have quite a harmonious environment here,
infact it facinates friends who visit to see how my cats lay down and wander amongst the birds treating them as part of an extended pet family. At the moment I've got a young Magpie who spends all day here, warbling away and sitting with my black cat (been here for almost 6 weeks now and very tame).....will have to see if I can capture some photographs of them together - Dave
HI Shaka..... yes the video was great.... funny I expected you to be female!! lol
The one problem I see with your harmonious world though is the worry that you are desensitising the birds to the natural dangers of cats etc. Your cat is obviously well trained but I wouldn't want to put a few round my place to that test... including my own! That is why I rarely feed birds here apart from the normal stuff about feeding wild birds.
It is hard I know when we want to interact with them but keep them wild at the same time.
Sorry Shaka, I thought you were a girl at first! I'm with birdie on this, I used to feed birds, but not anymore, to many cats in my neighbourhood. The birds get so tame, that they lose the fear and flight instinct! When we found half eaten Parrots we stopped, we now admire them from a distance!(I have taken to trapping cats instead, then take them to the council) Message to birdie: I have missed you, what happened? was worried about you, and the floods. Are you fine?
Wow, wow, wow.......... that is incredible...soooo unusual !! I wish, I could have witnessed it!! (you are lucky!)
