A Great Idea

This forum is a great idea so I'll try and enter my own "what is it" by including a photo.

oops, half is missing

only use small photos I guess

I'll try again but I need more skills dealing with digital photos. I've trimmed the original heavily to get this size and in doing so have lost the second bird at the back, a sharp-tailed sandpiper which was useful for comparison as they are the same size. The photo is now blurry as well.

Try this and forgive my experimenting.

Thanks Denis

You could be right there as I saw a number of Black-winged Stilts in the area. I thought it may have been a Marsh Sandpiper, but your suggestion seems more realistic.

I'm not sure, my money would be on a Common Greenshank look at the leg colour in the close-up.

It was about the same size as the sandpiper behind it and seemed much too small for the Common Greenshank. It was also much less wary of me than I would have expected from a Common Greenshank and also the bill didn't seem right - not lighter in colour at the base, and straight not upturned.

Still not sure it's a young stilt.Young stilts pictured below.(I hope)

too small for a greenshank?

Then that brings us back to your first thoughts...A marsh sandpiper. (maybe???). I do love wader ID almost always a challange.

ed, I thought juvenile B-W Stilt had black heads like those above and in this picture, not paler wings.

I wish there was a 'Review' or an 'Edit' function :-(

Not sure the bird pictured on picasa is an (Australian) Black winged stilt (race leucocephalus, the Pied stilt)I think the pictured bird is the american race.
