Happy Ducks in Daylesford

Hello,

I found this site this morning, after googling to identify a bird that visited our pond this morning. I had not seen the bird before....and I think it was a pied cormorant.

Usually I'm watching teal ducks and wood ducks, listening to kookaburras and cockatoos, and feeding rosellas, along with the ducks. I enjoy backyard bird watching....from my front porch!

I'm an American temporary resident in Australia, and I love your birds!

Looking forward to learning and sharing with folks in this forum.

Hi Carla,

Do you have a photo of the bird??

It's great to see someone else taking an interest in our birds. It's such a shame...I'm only 13, and none of the kids my age have an interest in birds.

Where are you staying in Australia??

Hi,
I saw your pictures...
You ARE lucky to be living in Daylesford.

Hi fluffywren, Yes! It is lovely to watch birds here in Daylesford. This morning there is a fog on the mountains that I see from my front porch. This reminds me very much of the Smoky Mountains that I love in Tennessee. There are some funny "crows" [they most likely have a more official name] on a branch in the tree outside my window right now, and I am enjoying the contrast of their dark/black feathers on the blue/gray that I see beyond them. It's good to know that 13 year olds in Australia appreciate what they have around them! It's nice to meet you in this forum. Thank you for commenting. Here's a snapshot of what I saw yesterday morning....accidentally caught two ducks at the pond! ;-)

Here are a few close-up pics of the happy ducks in Daylesford. These are the beautiful Australian Wood Ducks that I enjoy seeing in most of my mornings. I took these pictures this week.

Love the wood ducks! We see them all the time at golf, they are so cool, especially when they have all the little ducklings with them :D I'm pretty sure that your "crows" are Grey Currawongs (I think pied have the little white mark on the wing), if they are currwaongs they make a much more beautiful call compared to crows!
And Fluffywren, I'm 15 and I have found the exact same thing, no one my age has the slightest interest, lucky I have this sight as otherwise there'd be no one to discuss anything about birds with...
Just wondering how long are you in Australia Carla? Are you here for work or just a holiday? It's really great here :)

Hey Amateur.... only 15? !!!! So much knowledge for one so young ! LOL Don't feel bad both of you, none of my friends have the slightest interest in birds either! Why else do you think we hang out on this forum!?
I can see my friends stifle a yawn when I say I am going out to watch birds. When I was on holiday, I had to steal away and become an over stayer at the Wetlands just to get a few honest hours of birding in :) Everyone was waiting for me to go "shopping" at the mall. hmmmm ..... difficult choice... the Mall... or birds .
So it is especially good to have you two showing an interest here. We need your generation to help save what our generation is busy trying to destroy in parts.
Amateur, those Currrawongs have white on their wings and under their tails. One of them looks grey though. You are so right about their song, I have a recording of them calling somewhere, but I seem to have lost it, if I can find it I will post a link for Carla to listen to.

cheers

Hey Ameture,
I'm only 12 and all the people in my class think birds are a waste of time. Of course they are wrong because birds are a source of awe and wonder.
I'm so glad I can have friends like you that share my interests.

Another 12 yr old? You sure had me fooled Qldbird. LOL
We should start a new thread in the social column and see how many young people are prepared to own up to their hobby!
I would be classified as "really really old" to you guys I feel.
It is lovely to have you here
:')

Hi Everyone,

I just received the message about the site changes and thought I would pop in to try posting a couple of pictures or a video.  I had a little trouble with the photo I tried to upload, but here's a slideshow I recently made.  I've been painting he ducks that I have photographed.  Having fun with this!  Here's an example of my watercolor learning experience.
