Lake Macdonald, a few firsts for me. Wompoo and Jabiru.

Well we had hoped to get to the lake a bit earlier than we did, but we still had a great day. Picked up Birdie and met Clif2 at the Botanical Gardens by Lake Macdonald near Cooroy on the sunshine coast. The sun was well above the horizon, but we could hear lots of bird calls. As I ducked into the loo on arrival there was a whipbird dancing on the path railing, but of course didn't have the camera, bugga. Anyway, I won't bore you with too much more story and just post some pics.

Intermediate egret?

Jacana  Purple Swamphen  Wompoo Fruit-dovesThese guys were enjoying these palm berries. At first I thought I had spotted a parrot, perhaps a Mountain King Parrot, but when we got closer was happy to see I was wrong. They then went on to do a very good parrot impression.    We almost missed this awesome bird, but thankfully another birder followed us into this area and spotted this Jabiru and pointed us to him.

Thanks Sue :) I'm sure Shane will have some better shots of all these birds.

Maybe next time you need to set the alarm a bit earlier or did someone have trouble getting out of bed?

You got some beautiful shots there Karl. The Wompoo Doves have such striking colours, such a lovely looking bird. The Jabiru looks so graceful flying over the lake.

Glad to see that you all had a great day out.

Thanks :) I think you're right, should have set the alarm half hour earlier, but struggle to get to sleep before 11pm most nights, so getting up at 4am is a real challenge.

You've seen some great birds. Congratulations on getting up at that hour - I woudl find it very difficult. Don't worry about telling a story - it makes the post more interesting

Wonderful shots Karl ... and just a word to fellow members...there was nothing boring about our day out lol  It was great fun and totally hilarious at times ...us being the irreverend birders that we are wink

The best oart without a doubt for me was the gourmet breakfast he he ....no I jest  of course...it was the Wompoo fruit doves that I have always wanted to see close up and to see and hear them at cloe range was just fantastic.

As for the Jabiru ... well unfortunately we had a guide dog with us to show us the way but as helpful as she was ..... we could have done without her input.. I will post a few shots separately explaining that .

Karl these are just stunning, I love the photo of the Egret especially. No Karl I didn't get better photos of the Wompoo's than you did I think I was too excited about seeing them. I saw them on three more occassions after this day and still didn't get better photos. One of the gardeners told me that someone came up from Logan to have a look for the Wompoo's but missed out, a bit unfortunate. It was a good day as your photos show.

Regards

That's a bit sad, Shane, and I think I know who you're talking about, I suggested some people from down there come up to see these birds, shame they missed these guys.
