Apple + Red Wattlebirds + Noisy Friarbirds=WAR.
The friarbirds —they are on their migration run just now so the town is full of them & it's an all out no holds barred fight for a bit of tucker. They even seem to be eating seed!! Closer examination show they are just playing with it. Don't believe me check out the stills!! This video is worth watching just for the sound track, Hi energy & many birds not seen on camera, check it out & let me know how many different birds you can ID!!

It was an interesting afternoon, 6-8 Wattle birds and as many friars fighting one another as well as 5 rainbows. Yellow Rosellas as well as the Sulphurs and Galahs, not to mention the resident black birds. The Kookabarra like noise is a combination of the wattle birds and friars there was just so many that the noise was VERY loud and intense. This is, as best as I can recall, the same as the ruckus at the end with a rainbow making himself known. How you picked up the crickets in all that noise is beyond me.
Is rather funny about the crickets they are predominant in the 'hanging in' video from memory.

On the red wattlebirds movement I'm not sure if they migrate any distance on stay in the area, the numbers here have been much higher than normal, it's still common to see up to four visiting the apples against the regular one or two, but not as high as when the friabirds were around (maybe some one will help out with furthe insight). On the call/noise they use the barking type call to one an other, but a different noise when 'telling the friarbirds off'. You could be right in the kookaburra like noise could just be the friarbirds—they have some highly varied calls—moved on now it seems, havn't seen or heard one for a week or more.
