Morning gang
It is a GLORIOUS day in Sydney today. I am tempted to take the laptop outside at the office and work... On my walk to the cafe this morning to get a coffee I heard my first cuckoo of the season - and it wasn't the Channel-bill or Koel that I was expecting. Instead it was a fan-tailed cuckoo!
So lets embrace the start of spring and see photos of those birds that to me, signal it has arrived.
ok I think i have posted these photos before but they are the only ones I have of a Fantailed - Cuckoo.

Cool. Looking forward to seeing some cuckoo shots! I have a few ordinary ones to share. Common Koel (female). And of course Channel-billed Cuckoo (2 of them high in a tree).
Also have a Fan-Tailed Cuckoo.

I'll second that Dave, really looking forward to seeing some cuckoo shots too! Nothing ordinary about your shots! Boy those Channel-billed Cuckoo are an interesting looking bird that's for sure. I might just have to enjoy everyone elses shots - only four in Tas, and two of those only visit during summer. Still, might get lucky? So to speak

Fantailed Cuckoo we transported from a vet to a bird Carer a few months back. Was most probably a fledgling, which had been ejected from the nest, and some well intentioned person picked it up. This one was later released back to the wild.

How far are we pushing the definition of Cuckoo? (i.e. birds that have the word Cuckoo in their name but aren't cuckoos)

There's been a pair of Fantailed Cuckoos hanging around the nesting grounds at Daisy Hill Forest for a few months now.
Also at Daisy Hill Forest, I've seen these rather magnificent Brown Cuckoo-Doves. (which the first time I saw one made me say "what the heck kind of pigeon is that?")
Annnnd a Juvenile (I think) Common Koel that visited the tree outside my bedroom window one afternoon.

Here are my two Cuckoo shots: A Brush cuckoo and a fan-tailed cuckoo (please correct me if i'm wrong

Some from my trip round Australia: Pallid Cuckoo from Esperance, Fan-Tailed Cuckoo from Philip Island and a Bronze-Cuckoo (uncertain which one) from Hervey Bay. Fan-Tail Cuckoos are currently present around Philip Island to Lakes Entrance with 4 seen together on Philip Island. Do they congregate to nest?
Another couple from our continuing tour but of cuckoo-shrikes with apologies for the picture quality... maybe Masked from Darwin and White-Bellied from Cooktown but please correct me if I am wrong. Sue

I missed this because we had no power for two days. I heard about three Fantailed-Cuckoos calling in my garden, so I rushed outside and found one high up a tree. Here he/she is.

Cuckoo Shrikes are shrikes that are physically like cuckoos... the same way that and Owlet Nightjar is a nightjar which looks like an owlet.
