Azure Kingfisher, but...

I took this photo of an Azure Kingfisher last year in my garden, but for the last two days I have seen one that looked almost metallic green. The only Kingfisher in that colour would be a Red-backed Kingfisher, but according to my book , I should not find one in my garden. What do you think? Or do Azure Kingfishers sometimes look bright green?

I would love to get a pic, didn't see the bird today. It was as green on the back as the garden hose it sat next to, but a bit more fluorescent. I wonder if anyone has ever seen a juvenile? What colour do they have? But the Red-backed Kingfisher might come down here, (next to the Bunyip State Park)Who knows.?

Hi M-L,

I see Sacred Kingfishers all the time, Red backed only once.

I can say that the Azure is alot different in my opinion to those 2 species.

I have read the juvenile/immature Azure Kingfisher description in my field guide and it says that it is mid-blue not dark like the adults.

Did the bird you see have an orange belly, if so it shouldn't be a Red backed. And you are right, the Red backed Kingfisher's range is in only the north west of Victoria.

I only saw the back of the bird and the beak, it was a Kingfisher, just which one? Both times it was sitting in very bright sunshine, that could have made it look more green? Thank Curtis.

Yes, I think the sun made that colour.

Almost metallic green? Could be a sacred kingfisher, Araminta.
