They are not the best pics for IDing, must be that Sigma lens cheeky but I believe that you have 1 Large-billed Scrubwren 2 Bassian Thrush and 3 White-bellied Cuckoo-shrike

Thanks, Peter. Yep if i had the Canon 500f4 i would not have been on ISO3200 and shutter speeds of 1/30wink

I forgot to mention i was in a rainforest area. I thought Bassian but while searching i found Russet?

M-L, i didn't change my mind it's just an inquiry. The trouble with starting a list is that i am always trying to get new birdswink

I know i have a couple of pics somewhere of a bassian but have not found them yet.

Have you got a pic at the same angle as mine you could post?

You need to check the tail... The field guide should show the difference. Usually the Bassian Thrush is found above 500m.

Thanks, Brandon. That is why the inquiry. It does look shorter to me and the location is about 25m above SL?

Batemans Bay is too far south for Russet-tailed Thrush, and it looks good for Bassian to me, but I do find them difficult to separate.

I've looked for a photo of a "Bassian Thrush" in my garden, taken from a similar angle like the one in question. From this angle the tail looks shorter. The one in Shorty's photo is a Bassian Thrush, no doubt in my mind.

(bad photo, just to show a different angle)

Doesn't the 500m rule only apply in NE NSW and SE Qld?

To quote the 8th edition of Pizzey and Knight: on the Russet Tailed: "In ne. NSW, occurs on Gt Dividing Range up to c.775m; Bassian present above 500m"

Happy to be corrected, someone might have newer info...

White on the very tip of the outer tail feathers will separate the Russet-tailed from Bassian... which requires a very good photo. Fortunately, your photo shows the tail clearly... no white, so must be Bassian. So, I would assume that 500m altitude restriction is mainly refering to the northern part of its range, where it only occurs in the SE QLD Hinterlands. Also, the two calls are completely different...

I know, eventually I'll get dizzy and go and chase my tail somewhere else! Maybe I'll divert another of your photo threads into an endless camera discussion, Araminta!

I wasn't doubting the Id of it being a Bassian Thrush, but I was curious about how you differentiate the two of them in general where their range overlaps. So no harm intended! Oh, and I'm quite jealous of your 200 photos of the things, I've never had a good look at one where I was sure of what it was.
