Oxley Creek Common

These are a few photos of just some of the many birds i saw at Oxley Creek Common.
I took these photos with my new Canon EOS 1000D!!! I finally got one!
Enjoy!

A Double-barred Finch.
This is the first time i have every seen one. They are so cute!

A pair of Chestnut Teals which is pretty special to see at The Common.

A Chestnut-brested Mannikin.
Yet another first for me.

An Australasian Pipit.
The have an amazing camouflage. So good I didn't see it until i nearly ran it over!

I've never seen so many Little Black Cormorants before in my life!

A pair of Red-backed Fairy-wrens.
Too cute!

And a Tawny Grassbird.

Cheers

Wow wow wow ALex that is amazing!!!!! So happy for you that you got your new camera!!!!! And off to a "flying start" for the New Year already!
What a superb selection for your first posting from it... well done. Did you get the twin lens kit?

There will be no stopping you now that is for sure!

great to catch the pair of FW in the same frame and I love the chestnut teals. Looks like that was a sneaky shot without disturbing them. I know you will have hours and hours of pleasure with the 1000D. Congratulations and Happy New Year!

Fabulous pics QLDBird, Would the Black Cormorants be sitting above a farm dam containing fish? The multitude of strings seen in that pic is a ploy sometimes used to interupt the flight path of Cormorants comeing in for a feed.Ray

Hi Ray,

The dam did indeed contain carp (well from what i saw anyway).
Those strings in the background are actually powerlines. Apparently when i was there, there was a record amount of Little Black Cormorants at Oxley Creek Common(65)!

@Birdie...I forgot to tell you that i did in fact get the twin lens kit! YAY!

Great shots with your new camera. Same model as mine (and I think birdie has the same too) What settings have you been experimenting with? The pipit photo has a lovely depth too it, where the level of the bird is in focus with a bit of foreground and background blurring to show depth... I also like the crispness of the colour (although my eyes sometimes play up when I look at green!)

I generally had my camera on Av mode. Im pretty sure i was using the lowest possible f/stop speed (f5.6) that the lens would allow.

Got him already!

I get emailed every post that is made on the forums so I can get rid of them pretty quickly now - especially during work hours.

Hi QLDBird,

I was at Oxley Creek Common just a few days after you were, and saw the gorgeous Double-barred Finches, too. They were building a nest. I also saw my first Golden-headed Cisticola (and probably the Tawny Grassbird). It's a lovely spot, isn't it?

Andy.

Congratulations on the new camera, which is probabably over a month old already. Great work on taking the photos of many of the tricky birds to capture on camera - Especially the Tawny Grassbird, love how it is so small but stands out in that pastel background. Would make a great desktop wallpaper if big enough in size :p
