White Necked Heron

White Necked Heron by Frankzed, on Flickr

This sighting was a first for me, a single white necked heron feeding in the flooded drain alongside the walking path north of Edithvale Wetlands.

Thanks Birdie, I love the markings on the neck and body. It was quite a pleasant surprise to stumble across it.

Hi Wampy,Great picture, thats a young bird (juv) will lose most of the spots on the neck as it gets older and moults into breeding plumage. These guys have been missing from up here in Townsville since the rains started out west and down south, many months.... please send some back.....

Ed, thanks for the detailed information. It's the only one I've ever seen so I'm a bit reluctant to send it back north, but with our weird weather it may go back of its own accord.

Owen, Edithvale can be very hit or miss at the moment because of the high water levels, but if you're prepared to skirt the surrounding areas then you may find a pleasant surprise.

Thanks for the comments.

Hi Wampy, small world, unless your 'moonlighting' on the 'other' web site your bird was photographed at Edithvale by others.http://www.feathersandphotos.com.au/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=7518
I'm sure some will make thier way back north, our White-faced Herons, who have been gone for as long as the White-necked have started to arrive back, saw at least 5 on my outing to the Townsville towncommon this morning.

Hi Ed, we have thousands of white-faced herons down here in the south. Everywhere I go in Victoria I manage to see at least 6 in a group.

And no, I did not contribute that photo to feathers and photos, the contributor must have arrived shortly after I left. Like he, the light was terrible so it was a matter of making the most of it.

I thought exactly the same thing Ed, had to check the shots to make sure they were different :')
Very beautiful markings on this bird and it looks like you really got lucky Wampy !

Nice shot Wampy, Ed is right, I see stacks of them on the inland roads at the moment mainly in the table drains.

I am SOOOOO jealous Wampy! Great Photo:) I only have one photo of this bird which is very blurry and flying away. I only saw it once and haven't seen it since 2009!

This is nice. Sometimes young birds can be very trusting. I thought Edithvale was closed, or so some people told me. I wanted to pop in there in a couple of weeks while I am in Melbourne for work.

The bird hide is closed, but the viewing platform is open. Much better to walk along the track on both sides of the road to see something interesting as the wetland area has too much water in it.
