About a year ago I photographed this black shouldered kite in Turrella Reserve.
It was in a rather small dead tree at the head of a storm water channel but this proved an OK vantage point for the kite. By sneaking up very slowly I got very close indeed (mind you this photo is taken with compact digital camera pointed through binocular lens).
Last week I went down to Turrella to assess the walking track for a school group and I passed the dead tree thinking that it was lucky to be there given people's attitudes to dead trees and not recognising their importance for birds.
Next day, with the school group, I discovered the tree had been lopped.
Most annoying.
