Hi. I have noticed in the last couple of days two birds perched up in our large ash tree. I'm not very experienced at bird id but I think they may be Boobook owls. They are really annoying all the honeyeaters that usually hang around. They are causing a huge kerfuffle. We love them being there but the white-naped honeyeaters and other small birds do not and they are going nuts. I was just wondering what's going on and whether the owls (if that's what they are) are going to stay awhile and whether the other honeyeaters will get used to them or will they go somewhere else while they are there.
They may stay around for a few weeks but I doubt that would be very likely, unless they choose to nest in the immediate vicinity. The other birds would eventually chase out the owl, or instead have to either tolerate and probably will get used to him or go elsewhere. I doubt they would pose a threat to your honeyeaters, as boobooks primarily feed on insects. You are very lucky to have one roosting in your yard, very few people get such an honour!

Yes Ryu. It's an honour. We are quite excited about it and hope they stay for a little while. There are two of them roosting together so, I don't know what that means as far as nesting maybe. We also have ringtail possoms in that particular tree, so it's a pretty popular place.
Boobooks nest in tree hollows, so if there is a suitable hollow nearby...
