Bowra Again

It's been a while so I thought I would share some more photos from my Bowra trip in October.

I hope you don't mind.

Bustard (Male) - We were checking out a group of Black Kites circling low near the turnoff to Cunamulla when we looked around and saw this guy standing by himself in the field.

Pallid Cuckoo - This guy sat on this stump for about half an hour or more calling out. He was originally in the wrong light but I managed to sneak around to a bush that was better situated. I was so sneaky that a couple of kangaroos nearly ran into me. I don't know who got more of a fright, me or the kangaroos!

Masked Woodswallow - They had both the Masked and the Black-Faced Woodswallows. These are very confusing as the Masked has the black face and the Black-Faced has the black mask.

Budgerigar - Not many of these around when we were there. On the last day wer saw about 40 but up until then just small groups of 4 or 5.

Zebra Finches - 2 days in a row this pair were in exactly the same tree on just about the exact same branches. Must be their makeout spot.

Southern Whiteface - Didn't realise how small these guys were. About the size of finches.

Rufous Songlark - By far the most vocal and common bird there. From early morning to late afternoon, these guys would go from the top of one tree to another calling non-stop, even during flight. Their call is very interesting and unique. If you haven't heard one, try googling it or listen to an app.

Last but not least - The Aussie Emu. The day we arrived these guys were foraging around the cottage.

Brilliant set of shots Devon, looks like you had a great trip. I certainly don't mind you posting these, please keep them coming. I don't have a particular favourite enjoyed them all and all would be new for me.

Thanks guys.

If you have a close look at the emu chick, it has a couple of ticks on it.

I guess ticks don't affect Aussie birds.

Love all of them Devster. I've clocked an adult Emu matching our 80kms per hour in a car. It also matched our 100kms/hour. It was running parallel to us and seemed quite happy to match our speed. It was alone and so were we. We initially slowed down to get a good look at the bird. It was running to our left the other side of a fence. A large bush ended our encounter as the emu had to veer away to the left. That was years ago. Emus are beautiful birds. Such magnificent, funny birds they are, and just as vulnerable to heat exhaustion as we are, probably if not moreso.

I'm at Tenterfield, NSW. (Formerly known as "Hyperbirds".)

Thanks Shirley. We loved seeing them nearly everyday out there. Real characters. Thats interesting to note about heat exhaustion given where they live.

Brilliant shiots, Devon and thank you for sharing them. I love the Pallid Cuckoo as a great pic of a bird not that easily found. The detail is wonderful. I think that it might be an immature one given the checkering on the wings. Of course, the Emu chick is also a delight

Thanks akasha.

Thought it was a BF Cuckoo-Shrike at first but something didn't look right with the wings or the way it flew.

I was latter told  what it was. Such a big learning curve out there, it was great!

Yeah, I've spent a bit of time out there on private property just south of the Queensland border. The birdlife is incredible, so many new birds for me, including Masked and Black-faced Woodswallows. Never been lucky enough to come across a Bustard though.
