CAMERA MP/ZOOM BEST FOR BIRDS?

Birds may be at a distance of from half a metre to about 4 or 5 metres.

What zoom is adequate?

What MP (Megapixels)is enough?(keeping in mind the sensor size).

Just for identification purposes, not for other higher quality uses.

For ID purposes I wouldn't even worry about looking at the MP. The zoom thing with birds on compact cameras is as simple as the more you have the better off you are. My thoughts anyway.

Well I am in a similar position as I have to be within 5 metres to get a clear shot of a bird and any further and the photo is pixelated when cropped, I use a Kodak C713 with 7mp and 3x optical zoom, if you get a camera don't bother using digital zoom, just use optical zoom and then crop it later on. You should be able to get a decent camera for your needs for around $80 though
