Free flight bird display at Taronga Park Zoo

This week we were lucky enough to visit Taronga Park Zoo on one of the most stunning winter days possible. ( Not to mention the coldest) The Free flight bird display was awesome, and the highlight for me were the BOPs. They released a wedge tailed eagle and what a delight it was to watch her soar out over the bay behind and circle effortlessly around. To be so close to such an amazing bird was just unreal. But I had to laugh at the local noisy miner population as they were understandably jumpy ! They also did hunting and swooping displays with a barn owl and a barking owl....... too cool for words. They are to be congratulated for their educational display and apparently they have raised $90,000 in donations for conservation of endangered species by having their 80 yr old sulphur crested cocky and others collect gold coins from the hands of the audience.
To be buzzed by all the stunning birds was a real thrill and to meet and greet a carnabys cocky and watch the red tails fly was just beautiful.
Unfortunately for me it was at the end of the day and the battery on my SLR camera died just as the show started.

Probably one of the more memorable sightings though was the giant Condor. I just wish I had seen her with the Andes as a back drop LOL.

Cheers

i read this to my son (14) birdie who sat with his eyes wide open in amazement as i did. "that would be so cool Mum especially the 80 year old cocky"
and I totally agree except the whole thing would have been cool to me
love your stories please keep them coming

Glad you enjoyed that Myky. My daughter is 12 and she thought it was unreal ( especially the one on one with the cocky !)

these shots are not good as my battery had died and I only had the little compact to use by this time of day. gives you an idea though.

If you look down in the direction that her hand is pointing you can just make out the eagle taking off.

Great backdrop for a superb display!
Hope you enjoy these
