Koel Calls in Late night to Early Morning

Hi all

I love all birds really i do but there is one Koel
who sit's in a tree right across from the house and calls the whole night through and stops in early morning.
I didn't mind it before because it did it once every so often and stopped.Sleeping is becomming a problem.Would anyone know what to do.I had read somewhere bright light does the trick but im not sure if i want to get up and walk accross the road flashing with a torch.Any ideas are welcome.

Headphones, your favourite music playing LOUD,and RELAX!!!M-L
(I am the wrong person to ask, can't speak for others, but I find ALL man made noises , like "tuff tuff music" far more annoying!)Good luck!

Ah, the perennial problem of humans interacting with wildlife, janine. It's a bugger when a bird's constant calling keeps you awake. Is sleeping a problem generally for you or is it just this one koel? If the former then the problem obviously lies other than with the koel. If the latter then other than having a camomile tea night cap & using ear plugs I don't have any direct solutions that would cater for both you & the koel. I know that when I have trouble sleeping for whatever reason I read for about half an hour. That invariably does the trick for me but it might not for you, especially with a calling koel nearby. Besides, not everyone likes reading. Sorry I can't be of greater help.

I am one of those who are woken up by something and then just turn over and go back to sleep! We have a Currawong who calls all night very close but it doesn't keep me awake.

May I suggest you pick up a pair of travellers ear plugs, the ones I use are a soft putty type which moulds into your ear comfortably and do the trick. I use these on long haul flights when snoring/booze fuelled fellow travellers and noisy brats are a problem.

Poor old Koel, his only crime is not make a noise because he is looking for a mate! Rather put up with that than some noisy yapping dog barking at nothing.

Hi all

Thanks for the reply.
@ Raven I do have to put up with a yap yap dog living next door that barks all day and night plus the Koel one can get a bit annoyed.
@ Woko I have no Problems sleeping it is a problem when a barking dog and a Koel calling all night.

Like i said love all animals great and small especially since i work for the RSPCA.
Ear plugs work just fine.Thanks.

The dog yapping constantly is easy fixed, see your local council ranger/dog controller and make a formal complaint.

Council will then visit the people concerned and inform them that they have been served notice that the barking must stop due to neighbours complaint.

If they fail to do so, council then can order them to remove the dog, or council will take it for them.

Had the problem here sometime back, after complaint to council the dog was gone within five days, back to sleep again!

I've been awake all night because of this bird.  Cant sleep with ear plugs, so dont know how we will all cope now that we have the Koels every summer.  Like torture!

I've sometimes wondered if the folk who have the problems sleeping, or rather not sleeping, to the call of the Koel are those who simply see the Koel as a damned nuisance. Would it make a difference if those folk found out about the Koel, its ecology, its migration & other behaviors? Would a much greater knowledge of the Koel & its role in the environment make the Koel an acceptable part of their lives & therefore less likely to be viewed as a disturbance to their lives? My suspicion is that those who are inclined to live in harmony with & see themselves as part of nature are more likely to sleep soundly at night.

I have cockatoos screeching outside my window every morning at first light.  I don't even notice them any more :-D
