there has been a kookaburra coming to my yard for meat.
i have patted it and i got to walk around with it on my head and i got to hand feed it and pat it and hold it on my arm!

You are very lucky. My kookaburras are very timid and will not stay around while I am there, even if I am trying to feed them.

I took my parents on a picnic to Lane Cove National park several years ago.
We noticed a kookaburra in a nearby tree, but took our eyes off it to eat our sandwiches.
Not long after there was a loud flurry of wings and my dad's sandwich was snatched from between his hand and his mouth, resulting in a cut across his upper lip.
The kookaburra had silently swooped upon its prey (a sandwich), hit the brakes at the last minute and flew off with my dad's lunch.
More recently I've been frustrated in my attempts to see a kookaburra from my home and garden. I regularly hear them nearby, but they successfully keep out of my sight.
Yes, I did have another experience where I stayed at a B&B near Geelong. The kookaburras there were very friendly and would eat out of your hand. They seemed very precise and even though their beaks looked a bit scary they would take the food without even touching you.

My sister and I were once down the foreshore at Mandurah, south of Perth, and we had just got Chicken Treat for lunch. One of the pelicans nearby hurried over, opened its beak and snatched the whole box and contents out of her hand.
That is taking liberties too far!
