goulian finches

i know these are hard to find but does anyone know where they would be in qld thinking i seen something about mareeba maybe

Have you checked out the BiBY info on it? I f you haven't, here it is http://birdsinbackyards.net/bird/31. They're nomadic birds and live close to water, might wanna see if anyone else has an idea. Pretty birds though.

yes Amateur i had checked that out but thanks anyway, i have heard that they have been seen in the mareeba wetlands which i have also heard closes for the wet season which seems strange as well

Interesting question Joanneh, that is one finch that I have not seen in the wild.
If they are in Mareeba than that would be different as they are a top end bird ranging from the Kimberleys through to Arnhem land.
I know that they have been endangered for some time up there due to air sac mite.
Let me know if you see them around Mareeba plz Joanneh.

My dad told me about gouldians in an aviary at the Mareeba Wetlands when he was up there last. Acording to mr google there is a breeding and releasing programme at the Mareeba Wetlands Reserve that is reintroducing the Gouldian finch to the reserve. It apparently started in 1999 and I believe they have released gouldians. Sounds like a good idea to me.
