non-passerine birds

HI, I am researching for a semianr for uni on non-passerine birds. I have little knowledge of birds and was wondering if anyone could help me. I was wondering how birds are seperated into marine, solid and larid types of birds? Are they in different orders or families, or is it dependant on certain characteristics?

Thankyou
Megan

I have heard of passerine's as perching birds and also as song birds so I'm not sure. Your best bet would be to consult Mr google or your library. Peter Slater's field guide is devided into Passerine and non-passerine volumes and I am sure it has a definition in the front of one of them however it is a long time since I read it.
