No idea

Shot taken in southern vic, bird between 16-20 cms. Really not sure what it was. I was wondering a juvenile of something, dark eye and orange-yellow legs throw me.

Could be a sitella/ When they fly you see a flash of colour on the wings. Here is one of my pics. They are very variable.

Amateur

They're not that varied actually, judging opn the area the photo was taked I would assume it would be Daphoenositta Chrysoptera Chrysoptera Unless each species varies as well?

My field guide, by pizzey, is old but says the vic birds are more lightly streaked underneath, the head can be grey or blackish, Imm paler. Also I think there are 2 subsp. found in vic.

Sorry I got the spelling wrong, should be sittella.

I'm not sure if thats a sittella but the yellow feet seem to indicate it.

Thanks GregL and Amateur, the pattern didn't conclusively match any sittella in my Simpson and Day field guide, but it is the closest match of any bird I could find- maybe it's a juvenile (my guess for anything that doesn't quite match)! I also remeber the bird I shot being a little bigger than the 10-11 cms stated in the guide. Thanks for your imput.

I saw a group of sittellas today, they came right up to me. They were feeding a juvenile, it didn't look any different!
I still think that is a sittella. The only thing wrong is those flecks on the back, otherwise the size, shape, attitude and habitat fit perfectly.

Do you think maybe a juvenile GregL? I'm happy to go with a sittella, thanks for your help.
