This is a male Superb Fairy-wren in the last stages of moulting into eclipse plumage, after his breeding season has finished. Photo was taken this afternoon in my garden. In a few days he will just retain the blue tail and a black beak. (He will look just like the male wren Ms Wombat posted a few days ago, a very good photo that unfortunately is no longer there)

Male eclipse of a Superb Fairy-wren
That's amazing M-L that they change so much between seasons.
It explains a lot to this newly hatched bird photographer, never took that much notice of them before this year.
I just assumed that the blue ones had moved somewhere else.

Ooohhh - I have one, I have one.
This little fellow looks like he is now starting to change into non-breeding plumage?

Nice post Araminta. Very informative. Spotted this little fella in eclipse plumage at Dights Falls just yesterday.
