Common brown butterflies

There is an abundance this spring of common brown butterflies at our abode. I attribute this to the big increase in the areas of native grasses which are their preferred habitat & on which they lay their eggs. This might explain why some weeks ago I saw New Holland honeyeaters seemingly hawking for insects among native grasses. Maybe they were after common brown butterfly eggs although I haven't heard of these being part of their diet.

Thanks for this post, Woko. I did not realise this was an Australian butterfly until now, I thought you were referring to the Monarch butterfly so I have learnt something today.

I think, for some reason this year there are large numbers of butterflies everywhere. I don't know much about them, but this morning I saw two rather large black ones with a yellow dot in the top corners of the wing and two smaller red dots on the tail.(if butterflies had a tail, you know what I mean)
They didn't sit still for long, no photo, I followed them for a while.) M-L

Whoopeedo, Araminta. And thanks for the i.d., qyn. I'm becoming a butterfly fan, partly because they're beautiful in appearance & flight & partly because they're part of our ecologies & provide food for birds (& thought).

I counted approximately 81 common brown butterflies today.

LOL, there could be a job in that.
I saw something very fascinating, one of those butterflies was attacked by another of the same species, male I suspect,(what else could it be?). He followed him and kept flying into him and chassing him. Never seen that before.
