Hi Denis,
It occurs to me that you might like this: http://kotinetti.suomi.net/saaksi/index.php
Half the Finland checks this website hourly... three eggs so far. Pandion haliaetus (Osprey).

Following further emails, I discovered more about the place, and the environment there.

"Looks like a swamp, the 'trees' look like pines and spruce trees (the building material of the nest), maybe some birches. This is on an island of Hailuoto in the Bothnian Gulf:

*** Luoto means 'rock' - and hai means 'shark' in today's Finnish which is a bit confusing, but I think in old Nordic languages it has probably referred to some water creature in general.
.
Anyway, a windy and bare Northern location plus swampy so the trees don't really grow tall. The bird seems pleased with the view..."
. I hope BIBY members enjoy this, in view of recent posting of this same species sitting on a coastal lamp post, in Australia. Some (few) birds have a truly world-wide distribution.

Thanks for posting that Denis. It's strangely compelling, even at the slow load speeds.

Given how common they are in Oz, it is difficult to remember that as a lad in the UK (60s) their was only one nesting pair in the UK and people spent their two weeks holidays to go and see them, having to book (with the RSPB) to get into in their fortified and guarded nest site!! I remember seeing my first one on the River Spey (I think)in Scotland in the late 60s. they now nest not more than a klm away!!!.
