Yellow-tailed black cockatoo

My sister live at Woody Point on the Redcliffe Peninsula in Queensland. She phoned the other night to tell me that the yellow-tailed black cockatoos have returned. They feed on the banksias which have been planted as street trees. They visited this area at the same time last year and it seems that, as soon as they have finished with the trees, they move on to somewhere else. My sister said that you can see where they have been by the banksia flowers strewn over the footpath and road.

Hi Sue,I found your post interesting as the Red Tailed Blacks have just shown up here in Mackay,I wonder if there is a connection.

Hi all
Just thought I'd let you know that I saw a flock of around 8 -10 yellow tailed black cockies on the weekend. I saw them on the Midlands Hway just near Ross. They looked pretty specky, travelling together in low flight, just following the highway. Unfortunately no camera handy. Just typical!!!

The Yellow-tailed black cockatoos have been in East Maitland for two or three weeks, they are always noisy just before rain, heard them yesterday morning as the dust storm was arriving, it's raining today! They are after pine nuts in the area.

Hey don't they just love the pine nuts?

In Perth we used to live up in the hills with a garden full of tall Jarrah gums. the red tailed blacks would come along and trash the entire driveway after shredding the ends of the branches looking for gum nuts!!

What a privilege to have them visit wherever you are.

Hi Sue, I saw a flock of 30 yellow tailed blacks fly over my workplace and heading to roost in the nearby national park. first time I have seen them for a while. They always come from the same direction and head to the same place usually later in the day.

I saw some in Lysterfield Lake Park (Vic) a couple of months ago. Wondered what the strange bird call was in the distance and my daughter and I kept looking till we found out.

Thanks, I have a few other shots too. Would have like cleared ones but they were very high up and I only have a 200mm lens at the moment - still didn't do too bad.

They do make an unusual sound that's for sure.

Hi kathiemt nice pics of the yellow tailed black cockatoos in Lysterfield park. The 'squeeky gate' call they have is similar to gang-gang cockatoos which you might also be able to spot in the area too.

Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best

I actually could hear the sound of a cockatoo yesterday, that funny sound they make when just nesting in a tree. I went to look for it - it was on a neighbour's property but I couldn't see it. Later I heard very loud sqwarks and it was in my backyard at the top of a tree. Couldn't get my camera focused quickly enough to get it before it flew off. Had a very high crest and it was black but didn't get to see if there was any colour in its tail.

sounds like a YTB cockatoo. The gang-gangs are very pretty too, grey with a lacy-like red crest. Saw one in Yarram when camping but same as you ... too slow to get camera out before they took off. Georgep (on this forum) tells me they shoule be in this area so look out for them ...tho of course I'll be 'mad as' if you get a pic before me!

ytb - yellow tail black? No, this was a different shape and much larger than the yellow tails I've seen. It was quite a big bird. Hoping it will come back again tonight.

how exciting.... I don't know what it could have been, don't think we get glossy black cockatoos down here. Nothing else for it you will just have to stand on sentry duty and not move til you spot it again :)

Believe me, my ears are tuned in. The minute I hear any bird sound I've not heard before, or haven't yet captured on camera, I grab my camera and I'm out the door looking everywhere.
