I've been keeping a regular eye on the collection of treasures gathered by the satin bowerbird in the garden.
There are the various blues of course, and the one piece of yellow (mostly a crest feather from a sulphur crested cockatoo).
Yesterday I was surprised to find a purple peg among his collection displayed around his bower.
This morning it was still there, although in a different spot, but later had disappeared.
Is it unusual for these birds to move out of their normal colour preferences?
Hi Cecilia
Yellow Cockie Crest feathers are very popular with Satin Bowerbirds. Yellow seems to be their Number 2 preference in colours. I have seen onion skins, and pieces of banana skin. Purple seems outside the normal range, but hardly surprising, in view of their eye colours.
