We photographed this Sea Eagle on the Georges River near Oatley Point yesterday and wondered if anyone can tell us its history through the tags?

We have several other photos if required.

Cheers and thanks,

Antonia

Hi Mel

This is a very cool photo, and I am sure some researcher is going to be very excited to be told about this record!

I don't know who is doing work on Ospreys (it is actually an Osprey, not a Sea-Eagle), but there is a central registry in Australia, which approves all bird banding, so that band recoveries can be traced to their source.

Records are maintained by the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme, a division of the Federal environment department (SEWPaC - by acronym).  David Drynan is in charge and I have copied him into this email.  I am sure he will contact Antonia and provide details of the history of this particular bird, but if he likes, Antonia could contact David directly.

I'd love it if you can keep me in the loop, too - a very exciting record!

Cheers

Richard

Hi Richard,
What information can be obtained about an individual bird by its bands? see attached image.

Very exciting choosypix!

I don't know who is working on Osprey - but as Richard said, contact the Australian Bird and Bat-banding Scheme.

Hey Mark - great to hear from you :)

Nice photo - colour bands definitely match. That bird is covering quite a large distance!

Hi Mark,

It is extraordinary that this Osprey has been virtually unknown for 8 years and is now photographed twice in a few weeks.

The guy who originally banded it is Dr Greg Clancy and I know he would love you to contact him with this photo and location.

His email is Greg  Clancy [gclancy@tpg.com.au]

As well, could you copy Andrew Debbie [Debbie.Andrew@environment.nsw.gov.au]

Cheers,

Antonia and Peter
