Tawny Frogmouth - more information please

We've recently had a Tawny Frogmouth staying all day on our back verandah.  Usually appears after heavy rain.  It periodically calls - low booming sound.  Does anyone know why it is doing this?  Look forward to reading any replies.  Thanks.

I don't know anything other than what I've observed with these beautiful birds.  I call it a mournful cry, but low booming sound covers it too.  I hear it when the pair have a baby they are trying to teach to hunt.  The babes are somewhat adventurous, and the parents are constantly calling to keep them in line.  I also heard the sound when the male bird died (of old age) and the female mourned him.  It would tear my heart to bits.  I imagine they also call  when looking for a mate, or calling to a mate.

It is a normal contact call you are describing. It is probably letting its mate know that it's around. That's how bird pairs tend to find one another. Doubt it would be mourning anything. In all honesty, many of us tend to make birds more human-like than they really are.
