Twitchathon

Curious to know, in a twitchathon, is it counted if you hear a bird but do not see it? So far this year (idea from the Big Twitch by Sean Dooley) I've seen about 55 bird species, hoping to increase it to about 75 birds next year with an Adelaide trip coming up in the New Year and hope to see all the birds I saw this year again. Hope someone can advis ebout the twitchathon.

Hi Amateur, I think you have to have a sighting for a bird to 'count' on your list. wow that's pretty good, 55 in a year.
I think I might copy your idea and have a list of my own this year. Happy new year and enjoy your trip to Adelaide, I'm sure you'll have fun, don't forget your factor 30!

Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best

Alright you pair you have got the better of me, at the risk of sounding like a dropkick, what is a twitchathon please???

Hey Tassie... you said it not us!

It's organised by Birds Australia...
Cut n pasted from thier website ('cos I'm a lazy so-and-so)

The annual fund-raising Twitchathon takes place on the last weekend of October each year. It's a bird watching competition which you can take as seriously (the Main race) or as lightly (the Champagne Race) as you please. The aim is to have fun, see as many birds as you can in 24 hours and raise money by sponsorship for a bird conservation project. You can start anywhere in NSW or the ACT or a place of your own choice.Prizes go to individuals and teams (what crazy team name can you come up with?) for the most funds raised, the rarest bird and most species seen.

Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best

Hey thanks Hev there are few up here to list thats for sure.

Lol, so far this year I've seen 23 species with 2 which I am yet to identify (the two that I have the call of and I saw but have no clue what they are). And Tassie, same truck still? It looks like you've left it in the middle of an intersection and then hopped out to take a photo. Lol, I'm happy with 55 as last year I only stayed in the general area. Wish I could live next to a rainforest like in Queensland with some pretty & rare birds instead of having Rock Doves and Indian Mynas all day long to accompany me.

Gidday Amateur that is still the same truck mate,it is about 5mths old now. I guess it does look like I left it there, that shot was taken by my daughter during the Convoy for kids where we put in $50.00 each to enter the convoy, its run for disabled kids to buy equipement for them.
There was 160 trucks in the convoy and we raised about $14.500 that day and when a little 8yr old girlin a wheel chair with cystic fibrosis accepted the cheque the toughest of as all had a tear in the eye.

Well done Tassie, I too was wondering how you got that picture of your truck.

I haven't made a list of all the birds I've seen but I tried to do a memory survey on BIBY and couldn't remember them all.
I know the total is getting up there though for all my sightings.
I must get a copy of The Big Twitch.

Cheers
