This picture was taken by Ian Wills near Kangaroo Creek in NSW. It is black/grey and white striated with white rings around the eyes. It is very small - only 3 - 4 cm long. I think it may be an unfledged bird but no idea of what kind.
I would appreciated help in the identification.
Wow, I dunno, it looks unsusual! Maybe a young Striped Honeyeater?
first impression was vartied sittella?
I'd say a varied sittella too. Could you see a nest any where?
have you any other pics, that beak does not look like the long, narrow Sitella beak
Peter
Wouldn't imagine a Sitella being black and white like that?
Thanks for everyone's input. I'm afraid that I wasn't present at the sighting so can give no information on nests etc. My father-in-law took the picture and sent it to me to see if I could identify: which obviously I couldn't. I agree the beak looks more flycatcher than sitella but as the colouring it's hard to say what it might turn into post moult.
How about an immature White-browed Woodswallow? It matches the ilustration in Slater. Lorne, Bundanoon, NSW.
My first thought was also striped honeyeater, but I'm not sure it's correct. A sittella I would think would show yellow legs and beak and doesn't much look like a woodswallow to me either.
What sort of habitat?
