Variation in white browed scrub wrens

I thought about this after looking at Araminta's photos of white browed scrub wrens this morning.

Does anyone know how much these guys vary in size?

I've seen them many times hopping around in grasses and undergrowth where they matched the size of 11-13cm suggested on the description page here.

But I've also seen what I thought were White Browed Scrubwrens hopping around on the lawn at my folks place that seemed really tiny, maybe 6-8cm. I think juveniles should be much the same size as adults, so it's probably not "baby" birds. It could just be that they were in a more open environment and seemed smaller I guess.

Has anyone else noticed this much variation in size?

Can't say I have ever noticed a huge size difference like that Timmo but there are definitely differences in plumage in this species (off the top of my head I can't remember if there are different races)

Thanks, Holly.

Maybe it was just the surroundings being open rather than scrubby that made them seem smaller ...

Or I had an impression of them as a larger bird at that point, more like a grey fantail.

The memory is such an unreliable tool - I need a camera and some indicator of scale.

Hi Tim, I have noticed a difference in size, I will pay some more attention to it , the female might be smaller? But I'm not sure, will keep an eye out from now on, and let you know.

Morcombe says there are "4 races, perhaps divided in up to 11 races". There doesn't seem to be a size difference between the sexes.
