A bird often heard but never seen

In spring every year we're visited in Sydney by a bird with a call that's a series of sparrow-like chirps followed by a rising note. The note, which is not shrill or especially high, can have a slight tremolo to it. A hundred time or more I've stood under a tree from whence that song is emanating but I have never caught a glimpse of the bird. Can anybody suggest a name?
