i stand corrected windhover
2 years on from the original post I am looking at this thread for the first time. I remember the first time I saw a Pacific Baza was whilst visiting Cairns on holiday.
However today, while gardening, with Noisy Myna alarm calls going all day, i notice all the comotion being caused by just the same lovely species, right above my head, one adult and two juveniles (who chirp constantly), in a eucalypt, just east of Glenbrook, in Lapstone.
I've been aware of this hawk for some time now (have been living here for 6 years) and originally thought this was a Collared Sparrowhawk. But for the first time today, in such close proximity, I saw a small crest on each bird, as they perched above my head.
I was surprised to find this species in the blue mountains, but all evidence suggests these birds are not just coastal.
Lovely day.
