Bird of the Week: 16th September - water

Hi guys

Another classic one this week that has been done before. Lately all my themes have been influenced by the weather - and it is a dreary day in Sydney today smiley Lets see water themed photos...

A very wet baby Dusky Moorhen.

Do you remember this one? That is not rain, this is wet horse poo. He dived into it to get a fat worm.

Wow Nathan, the reflection is so sharp, almost as sharp as the original.

Thought I might take a different line and present a challenge... spot the Asian Dowitcher amongst the Bar-Tailed (& probably Black-tailed) Godwits, Eastern Curlew, Whimbrels and Knots. There were Black-Tailed Godwits identified in fight but hard to pick out once wings are down. This was taken at the Broome Bird Observatory in late July. It would be great to be there at peak season!

Second picture is of a White-Browed Crake at Townsville Common, a place worth re-visiting so I can get a better picture. This was a hasty shot in fading light from one of the many hides. Sue

Beautiful shots everyone yes  mpb, wow!  You can't get much water themed than that penguin shot, awesome!  What sort of penguin was it?  Is that a type of Heron in the second shot?  I'll stop the 20 questions now laugh

Ruby, looking at the lava , I would think the photo might have been taken on Galapagos?? Could it be one of the Lava Herons? But I think there are other Herons on Galapagos?

M-L

Araminta, you are spot on. Both taken at the Galapagos. I think the heron is a lava heron.

The penguin is a Galapagos Penguin like this one also taken from in the water.

Thats a really beautiful photo Nathanheart

M-L: I see the plumed whistling ducks every day here at my place! They are a bit pesky at times because they come in, in flocks of 50 or more and eat all our poultrys food! They really are beautifulsmiley I love that in some light their backs look almost blue. And their eyes! Don't forget their eyes! They always turn out red on the camera, no matter what the lighting isindecision

A couple from the smile file.

1) fairly lonely young Australasian Grebe who spent a deal of time trying to adopt the ducks at the local lagoon.

2) A lovely male Darter down by the banks of the Brisbane River. For a long time I only ever saw the female of the pair, but he showed up eventually.

3) After some torrential rain earlier this year, the water at Minnippi Parklands rose up to cover the boardwalk thing around the lake. I liked the juxtaposition and the "Signs don't tell us what to do" attitude from the cormorants. :)

Dug up some more nice ones.

Couple of Grey Fantails, a Striated Heron doing some fishing, a Great Egret doing some fishing. A willy wagtail enjoying a break in my bird bath from nest-building.

Finally, another pair of civil disobediants. :) It might not be obvious from the photo, but this (somewhat inexplicable) sign was about 10 metres out into the Brisbane River.

Love the Albatross dwatsonb. Something I don't see every day. :)

Thanks Elsie and Araminta.

Elsie - lovely Scaly breasted lorikeets. I spotted a whole flock of them at Sherwood on sunday, and they were almost more yellow than green on their chest. Must be breeding season colours.
